about
This song was written after years of playing gigs in San Francisco, and observing mass gentrification play out in the streets. The lyrics came about in a concrete way after seeing a picture of a vending machine selling puffer vests in the arrival terminal at SFO.
lyrics
The rest of us are out here waiting for the storm to pass
Waiting for you to see the world beyond your looking-glass
Stick me in your box so that your world can see
Then forget it and let me rot like all your groceries
So can I ask, with all that cash, who do you support?
Snuggled up in a down vest that you bought at the airport
Go on and sit there, tell me how you didn’t think about it
Look at the machine, tell me how you could live without it
You don’t have to tell me, that you didn’t think about it
You say, you wanna make a change, boy I doubt it
I know, that you didn’t think about it
I know, that you didn’t think about it
Tell me, how you were gonna save the world
Tell me, how you were gonna save the world
We all know that you didn’t think it would be so cold
Getting to the land of milk and honey on a bridge of gold
See the man sleeping on the street ’n wonder, how’d he get so old?
He used to have a bed to sleep in ’til his house got sold
So look out of your window while it rains and pours
You don’t care who dies, so long as you get yours
Go on and sit there, tell me how you didn’t think about it
Look at the machine, tell me how you could live without it
You don’t have to tell me, that you didn’t think about it
You say, you wanna make a change, boy I doubt it
I know, that you didn’t think about it
I know, that you didn’t think about it
Tell me, how you were gonna save the world
Tell me, how you were gonna save the world
I know, I know
Tell me, tell me
